Tournament briefing: The International 7 (DotA 2, Valve)

The International 7 is..? Oh, come on, you know what TI is!

The best teams around the world fight for the one and only title that truly matters in DotA 2. Hosted by Valve, The International is every DotA 2 fan’s annual tournament of memes and comebacks, moments of excellence and soul-crushing defeats; and, every year we will be rooting for the underdogs, alongside our favourite teams. Or, on the side of bettors, or a gambling fallacy to send money flushing down the toilet drain. Many bets will make people rise from rags to riches—or the more unfortunate of outcomes.

As with any TI, twitch.tv will be your main go to for live coverage and match-by-match weather-meta-Purge pointing at things report.

For those that have recently joined the MOBA craze, a newbie-friendly stream will also be available, where colourful panellist and hosts will present the matches in a simpler and more detailed manner.

The International 7 Format (Main Event/Playoff)

The Group Stage has concluded! Now, we are only hours away from the Main Event debut!
The final push has begun, and the remaining 16 teams will be fighting tooth and nail for their survival and the TI Champion title!

The Main Event will follow the following format/rules below:

  • Sixteen teams in a double-elimination bracket.
  • Top four teams in each group of Group Stage start in the Upper Bracket.
    • The 1st place in each group of Group Stage picks their opponent from either the 3rd or 4th place finish in the opposite group.
    • The 2nd place in each group plays the team that was not picked by the 1st place.
    • All matches are played in a best-of-three.
  • 5th-8th placed teams in each group of Group Stage start in the Lower Bracket.
    • The 5th place in each group of Group Stage picks their opponent from either the 7th or 8th place finish in the opposite group.
    • The 6th place in each group plays the team that was not picked by the 5th place.
    • First round is played in a best-of-one
    • Proceeding rounds in the lower bracket are played in a best-of-three.
  • Grand Finals is played in a best-of-five with no game advantage.

In the mean time, the prize pool continues to break last year’s $20 million dollar record. The jackpot stands, at the moment, at an ever-growing $24,505,305 and surprising mainstream naysayers and people all around the world.

 Newbee

Check out our Newbee assessment from their past matches:

Newbees amazing display throughout The International kept us wondering how much further can they go. The team is known for it being full one trick wonders, but time and time again, Newbee continued to call the shots in the drafting phase, as well as in-game.

First, the drafting. It’s full of synergy, taking advantage of familiar, yet effective, pushing lineups. Be it a Drow-centered one or a Veno/Visage draft. Newbee are ruthless in their execution. Veno/Shadow Shaman is also a team favourite, trading some tankiness for the utility and crowd control mix-up.

Secondly, the plays. Sccc and Moogy are a phenomenal duo, with the first sitting in the front lines while Moogy blasts away at his enemy with devastating effects. Be it towers or enemies, Moogy and Sccc are the main damage output of this team, one that still manages to play around bans and target focusing.

Meanwhile, Damien “kpii” Chok and Hu “Kaka” Liangzhi create space and allow their teammates to do what they do best, even if this leads to their deaths. They are at their best in the middle of the battles or at the other end of the enemy spears defending and dying for their lane partners.

And, at the centre of it all, we have Hong “Faith” Da Zeng who keeps the team focused on their goals and acts as the only moving part in Newbees rather rigid playstyle. It’s not uncommon for captains to take the roles of supports, but few play this role as well as Faith does. He’s not the play maker, but he’s the one that sets things in motion for his team to succeed, time and time again.

Team Liquid

Team Liquid came back from the dead it seems. After getting knocked in the Lower Bracket at the debut of Main Event, Team Liquid managed to return and now compete in the Grand Finals.

Their discipline and strong coordination brought them so far, but is it enough? While Team Liquid managed to defeat all of their opponents in the Lower Bracket we only saw two 2-0s. Their record demonstrates that they can easily K.O. weaker and, to some extent, equal teams. But, when it comes to the top tier, Team Liquid can’t really push their edge to its full potential and that’s dangerous for them.

Kuroky continues to be the back bone of this line-up, coordinating his teammates. I have continuously criticised Team Liquid hazardous coordination. Don’t get me wrong, they are all fantastic players, that compliment each other, but without proper guidance from a leader, the team seems lost.

Miracle- continues to amaze us as his focus and game sense is unparalleled, but without the proper goal, he can’t really contribute to his team’s efforts.

Gank-oriented and aggressive, Team Liquid seeks to cripple their opposition, while they thrive. If Team Liquid manages to secure a farm and growth advantage they will exploit it to win team fights or secure the map.

If needed, Team Liquid can avoid team fights and focus on taking advantageous, uneven, fights or seek to recuperate through split-pushing with Broodmother, Lycan and even Lone Druid.

To be honest, this will be tough for Team Liquid. They have come so far but this will be their greatest challenge. Under pressure, Team Liquid might break, effectively losing its fragile coordination. Team Liquid needs to secure an advantage over their opponents.

Newbee can take a few hits, as kpii and Kaka will their best to keep their cores alive and safe. If Team Liquid manages to bypass their lines of defence, Moogy and even Sccc will be in danger of being shut down.

It will be a battle that relies strongly on how much information they can gather and how well can the team use it to weaken the opposition. When it comes to coordination, Newbee has the better odds.

3-1 Newbee.
