Introduction

Beyond the Summit returns with its second event of CS:GO’s “cs_summit” tournament. Featuring a relaxing environment and top level competition, the 2nd cs_summit succeeds the major, which saw cs_summit participants Cloud9 win the grand finals after beating the top 4 teams of CS:GO on their way through.

Located in Los Angeles with a $150,000 USD prize pool, the event features an interesting mix of rosters in the foray. While featuring returning teams Ninjas in Pyjamas, Cloud9, and SK Gaming, and Team Liquid, some of these teams make their first appearance as a team or with a new roster.

Liquid themselves have since bolstered with the additions of steel and returning member NAF. Vega Squadron come to the cs_summit as a team that made many eyes turn at the first and second stages of the major, defeating many teams. North completely shuffled their roster, losing the majority of the core lineup and retooling with Kjaerbye from Astralis and mertz from the Academy squad. On the minor side of things, Ninjas in Pyjamas replaced THREAT with pita as the coach. One of the oddities of the event is Torqued, who replace OpTic. Featuring ex-iBP players and Pollo and koosta, they are surely a surprise team to look out for.

With new lineups on display, a relaxing environment to chill to, cs_summit looks to bring back to the nostalgic LAN environment of many gamers watching from home!

Team Liquid

  • NAF
  • Twistzz
  • nitr0
  • EliGE
  • steel
  • zews (coach)

For a preview of Team Liquid before this match, you can read EsportsBet’s preview here.

EliGE powered Team Liquid to a swift 2-0 victory against Heroic (Beyond the Summit)

Team Liquid started off the day on the wrong foot, nearly losing to Torqued on de_mirage before closing it out 16-14. Had it not been for strong performances from nitr0 and steel on each map, Team Liquid may have been flushed down the drain.

The next best of 3 came around against Heroic, and it felt as if a switch from Liquid came to fruition. They completely vaporized Heroic into the vicinity thanks to a monstrous performance by EliGE. With NAF and EliGE on the gears, Team Liquid shut down Heroic to only 10 rounds across the entire best of 3, cruising to an easy victory and to a loser’s final matchup against SK Gaming.

From what we saw from Liquid across the 2 matches, it is clear that each individual member has the potential to shine on each map. Twistzz’ pistol play is key to keeping the opponent’s economy in check, nitr0 and steel pop off on the entry from time to time, whereas NAF and EliGE shine as the stars of the team. After Liquid’s performance against Heroic, it must just be safe to say that this is the strongest Liquid have looked in a long time.

SK Gaming

  • FalleN
  • TACO
  • coldzera
  • fer
  • boltz
  • dead (coach)

For a preview of SK Gaming before this match, you can read EsportsBet’s preview here.

coldzera won’t be all smiles and laughter after going cold against Cloud9 (Beyond The Summit)

In SK Gaming’s only best of 3 of the day, they saw themselves overwhelmed by Cloud9. Both of their CT sides on de_overpass and de_inferno were horrendous, as viewers saw a spectacle of SK Gaming getting utterly smashed by the relentless aggression of Cloud9. The more important x-factor of this match, coldzera, seems to always go cold against Cloud9, as he performs at his worst when playing against the US lineup in a total of 9 maps.

It didn’t help either that boltz had the wrong screw bolted into him, having his worst map at the event with a 6-21 score on de_inferno. Of course, he wasn’t the true problem for SK Gaming. Remember that a team game is lost as a team, and SK Gaming clearly did not look like the championship winning SK Gaming we saw back in December.

If SK Gaming want to get back into the groove, they’ll need to show a different SK Gaming compared to the one that struggled against North and Cloud9. coldzera and fer need to step up tremendously, and boltz needs to be more confident in his play if they want to take it against Liquid.

_________

Heroic

  • JUGi
  • Snappi
  • MODDII
  • es3tag
  • niko
  • peacemaker (coach)

With RUBINO coming in to presumably pick up in place of es3tag, Heroic are currently in the “fight-or-flight” period of this current roster. This time, it’s all loose with a tint of strategy here and there from Snappi and MODDII, while unleashing the likes of a (possibly) departing es3tag, JUGi, and niko.

JUGi, Denmark’s next rising AWP, is clearly at the top of the cs_summit (Beyond the Summit)

JUGi, time and time again, has proven to be the star of this Heroic squad. Their bo3 upset against Ninjas in Pyjamas and their qualifying run for IEM Katowice is all thanks to his cerebral AWP play. In just the past few weeks, they’ve defeated North, Gambit, BIG, and Ninjas in Pyjamas. Even against Cloud9, when Heroic were at their wits’ end, JUGi’s flashy AWP plays and clutches is what kept them in the game. His performance determines how competitive Heroic are coming into every match, and it showed yet again as he led the fragging board against NInjas in Pyjamas. Even in the past two weeks, he’s helped Heroic defeat North, Gambit, BIG, and Ninjas in Pyjamas.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that the other members of the team should be downplayed, as all the others have their plays of brilliance. But, inconsistency and poor performance is the bane of this lineup, primarily for niko and es3tag. Both of them have great potential, but can’t transfer that into the biggest matches of their careers. But, with the experience of Snappi and MODDII, and bringing in a strict and experienced coach of peacemaker, they may be able to flap their wings and shine once again–maybe except for the potentially leaving es3tag.

North

  • MSL
  • aizy
  • mertz
  • valde
  • Kjaerbye
  • ave (coach)

For EsportsBet’s original preview of North, click here.

While some’s expectations (including mine) were downplaying North, the roar of the North can be heard loud and clear. Exploding straight out of the gates, they have provided one of the most tense and exciting bo3s in this tournament.

valde-mort was a tough villain for SK Gaming to overcome (Beyond the Summit)

Against SK Gaming, you’d expect North to have been completely blown out of the waters. Of course, completely demolishing Vega Squadron is no small feat, but defeating SK Gaming may have been too tall of a tasks for the lions of Denmark. That wasn’t the case, as valde powered SK to the brink of defeat, but the efforts of his teammates couldn’t recuperate a win for North. Even then, the map scorelines (13-16, 20-22) tell that North may be looking a lot better from the shuffle than we truly think.

valde is starting to shine as a star on this team, and mertz’ unaccounted aggression makes it hard for teams to truly shut North down. One can tell that the synergy for North at this LAN is way better than the dead-eyed North at the ELEAGUE Major, and that a new breath of life has touched this new lineup. Kjaerbye entrying and clutching, valde’s lurk working to perfection, and MSL’s leadership have all been gathering the pieces together for North. What remains to be a mystery is aizy, whose consistency has risen, but his true place in the team remains to be one in question. Regardless, his ability to support his teammates and frag when needed is something that MSL sees as very important to the core function of North.

For a preview of Cloud9 before this event, you can read EsportsBet’s preview here.

Cloud9 at the cs_summit LAN have had two convincing best of 3s against Team Liquid and Heroic. While they are not necessarily at the caliber of Cloud9 yet, these wins solidify C9’s ranking at this event and from the previous major.

During the bo3s, Cloud9 played with no absolute care in the world. What’s more important is that even though Cloud9 lost most pistol rounds, they converted the majority of their force buys and clutch rounds, which is the reason they were able to defeat Heroic and Team Liquid so handily. Breaking the opponent’s economy and morale are very important psychological factors to winning, as this can demoralize an unprepared team very easily.

tarik and co. manhandled their opponents with relative ease at cs_summit (Beyond the Summit)

The question will be against SK Gaming, who they’ve had mixed results with when playing against SK at full strength. Generally, SK Gaming are the favorites here, but recent events may just turn the tide for Cloud9 against SK Gaming. Of course, most people still remember the shroud and n0thing C9 who defeated this SK Gaming lineup (w/o boltz) and the ESL Pro League Finals, but that is from a time that has long passed.

SK Gaming

  • FalleN
  • TACO
  • coldzera
  • fer
  • boltz
  • dead (coach)

SK Gaming were marred by the roster lock troubles at the major, but were able to secure a semifinalist finishing with the help of ex-member felps. Before, they were practicing with boltz, and ended up continuing their dynasty under a newly reformed roster.  Considering recent form with boltz and their win against FaZe in the latest ESL Pro League Finals, there’s no doubting that with this lineup, SK Gaming are the best in the world (currently). Cloud9 are on the rise, but an asterisk remains, for they have yet to face a strengthened SK Gaming.

The Librarian almost had his library disrupted by the roar of the North (Beyond the Summit)

SK’s cs_summit 2 run has very little to say apart from their bo3 against North. Against North, it was an uphill struggle, as a massive performance by valde kept both maps close. In the end, it was SK Gaming taking it 2-0 on de_inferno and de_cobblestone 22-20 and 16-13. Of course, this can be attributed to SK Gaming shaking off the rust and FalleN having the inability to read into this newly formed North lineup. Yet, they might want to stop having to rely on FalleN’s clutch entries and openings with the AWP if they want to beat Cloud9 handily.

SK, as usual, prefer to rely on fer’s relentless and hard-to-counter aggression, whereas TACO generally plays bait and opens up avenues for boltz/FalleN/coldzera to trade. In reality, apart from boltz’ lurking, each SK player “share” all other roles in retrospect, and this makes them a very dangerous team. Their chemistry and synergy together is on another level, and it’s what makes them one of the hardest teams to beat. A team can predict their plays, their strats, and each player’s tendencies, but their skill and teamwork together is unparalleled to many others. That is why SK Gaming is one of the best teams in the world.

Ah, Cloud9, the ELEAGUE Major Champions and the first North American team in CS:GO History to win a Valve-sponsored Major event. They truly cement themselves as one of the best teams in CS:GO and in North America as a whole. Their play at the major was truly superb, as tarik’s IGLing powered them through the grand finals. Actually, all in all, it was Skadoodle, Stewie2k, and tarik who went big in the finals, as Stewie’s holds on B during de_inferno and Skadoodle’s clutch ability throughout the series was extremely vital; tarik’s ability to open up space was just as crucial too.

Each member of Cloud9 played a huge role in their championship run (ELEAGUE)

The important part to note from this major was the resurgence of all Cloud9 members, as they all posted 1.05+ ratings throughout their ELEAGUE run. It’s undeniable that their CT strongholds were impeccable, and were akin to their T sides throughout the major. While this major may have been a historical moment for North American, there is the possibility that Cloud9 may falter in the aftermath. This is primarily due to the fact that teams will be prone to analyzing them.

Still, C9’s dangerous arsenal involves the relentless aggression of tarik, the anchor of RUSH, and the double AWP setup of Stewie2k and Skadoodle. Add to that Skadoodle and Stewie2k’s clutch ability in the late game, and C9 are a pretty unstoppable squad.

Team Liquid

  • NAF
  • nitr0
  • Twistzz
  • steel
  • EliGE
  • zews (coach)

Liquid relinquished the struggling AWPer of his duties (jdm), and brought in a player known for his performance on Renegades: NAF.

Liquid welcomed back NAF just a few days ago, and boy are they grateful (Twitter)

NAF is no stranger to Liquid, having played with nitr0 before back in 2015 under the Liquid banner. After his removal, he trekked across North America, before settling in at Renegades. Becoming notable for his resurgence, NAF was pivotal in Renegades’ rise in performance, even netting them a championship at StarLadder. Now, he joins Liquid and relieves them with much needed firepower.

Due to this change, nitr0 has assumed the AWP role. steel, while not the IGL yet, has assumed a concrete support role once held by nitr0. EliGE and Twistzz together play the entry duo (with Twistzz lurking at times), and their CT sides feature a similar set of roles. The only change is that NAF/Twistzz will occasionally switch between secondary AWP roles. But, generally, NAF and Twistzz play anchor roles whereas steel plays “uncomfortable” spots and EliGE plays flex rotate.

While this new roster had yet to play an official together, Liquid showed a strong debut by defeating Ninjas in Pyjamas in a 2-1 thriller. Winning the last map on a comeback to end 16-14, it is safe to say that Liquid are adjusting to their roles very easily. But, with this new roster change, it may be a honeymoon period for this squad. Roles are not fully set in stone, and the chemistry and synergy is still building for this squad. But, their future at this event is not bleak at all after defeating the Swedes.

_________

Vega Squadron

  • jR
  • mir
  • keshandr
  • hutji
  • chopper
  • Fierce (coach)

Vega Squadron’s ultra-aggressive style completely caught opponents off guard, as they stormed through the ELEAGUE Major Qualifier. In that Qualifier, they upset the major finalists FaZe on de_inferno (16-6), and nearly completing the comeback against G2 on de_overpass (16-19). Their overall performance at the ELEAGUE Major was a bit underwhelming in comparison, just missing the playoffs. Still, the CIS squadron are a team that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Vega Squadron’s play-style is unorthodox, electing to play a hyper-aggressive style on both the CT and T side. Their strength is actually on the CT side, whereas their T side in comparison is significantly weaker. Their primary strength relies on their unpredictability and their tendency to win on unusual buys/aggression. Their strategical depth, on the flipside, is one that seeks improvement.

The roster, which remains to be the longest unchanged roster, practiced non-stop in preparation for the major

The stars for this team are mir (generally a lurker), chopper (anchor), and is led by jR as the primary AWP and IGL. The firepower this team amasses is sufficing enough to compete at high levels of competition, but their ability to comeback from large deficits remains to be a question in consistency.

North

  • MSL
  • aizy
  • mertz
  • valde
  • Kjaerbye
  • ave (coach)

North are in a bit of a groove right now. They come straight out of the Danish shuffle looking completely jumbled up, having benched k0nfig and cajunb in favor of Kjaerbye and mertz. Obviously, this seems to be a huge downgrade. Though, when you look at their performance in recent times and at the major, there had be a change to keep them from going south.

mertz himself is an AWPer hailing from the Academy team, a team that was marred with issues of performing on LAN. While a capable AWPer and rising talent himself, he has yet to perform like a star. Kjaerbye, on the other hand, was one of the key pieces of Astralis’ major championship. An entry fragger by trade, Kjaerbye in the last few months hasn’t been performing at that MVP level for a while.

cs_summit 2 will be mertz’ first true test against high level opposition on LAN

It’s completely evident that North lack a lot of firepower in comparison to the old roster, especially with aizy and MSL still in the team. But, that doesn’t mean they’re completely out of title contention at the cs_summit. Having already played the IEM Katowice 2018 Closed Qualifier, they were able to qualify, beating AGO Gaming, Natus Vincere and HellRaisers to make it. Having MSL up his fragging game and garnering whatever experience they could muster before the LAN event, North are not a team to sleep on.
