The Counter-Strike scene moves to Chicago for the next few days as we head to IEM Chicago 2018. The tournament will see several teams from all across the globe participating in the event. There are a total of 16 teams at the event competing for a prize pool of $250,000. The event takes place at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago. The event started on the 6th of November and will continue till the 11th. While Astralis is considered to be the strongest team in the tournament, we have not seen them perform at the same level of dominance since the FaceIT London Major 2018.

The IEM Chicago tournament will be crucial for the teams aiming to prove themselves on the big stage. While the top teams are obviously competing for the title, many smaller teams are also aiming to prove themselves amongst the bigger fish.

The tournament will feature a double elimination format where every team will get a chance to prove themselves. The format allows teams to make mistakes and yet have a chance to qualify for the Playoffs. So far in the tournament, teams like North, MiBr and Natus Vincere have been eliminated from the tournament.

Mousesports vs BIG Gaming

Mousesports

Mousesports Roster:

  • Styko
  • ChrisJ
  • Sunny
  • Oskar
  • Ropz

Mousesports remains a team that is slowly rebuilding this team. They did make the mistake of adding Snax to the roster despite having a relatively successful team with Styko. The team with Styko had achieved a lot of success and were constantly playing in the playoffs and sometimes in the Grand finals of tournaments. On paper, Snax is a much better player than Styko, however, the reality was quite different than expected. Snax did not find a proper fit with the team and he is now a free agent.

The Mousesports team is now a part of its old roster and it is already looking quite good. The team’s preparation has been much better with results already showing on the International stage. However, the hiatus from the team meant that the team is not yet fully in synergy despite Styko being on their team right now.

ChrisJ is the glue that holds this team together. Formerly the star on the roster, ChrisJ has allowed other players to take the spotlight on the team. His ability to take the back seat allowing for new, often younger players take the lead is truly inspirational. ChrisJ is also performing really well with the AWP. He is extremely potent with the AWP and can often play aggressively as well.

In addition to the Captain, this team relies on Sunny to put up strong performances. He might not have the most amenable attitude when it comes to being on a team, however, there is no doubt about his talent. His positioning and the mental fortitude while making strong plays is unparalleled. The team relies on Sunny to consistently put up decent numbers and he does not disappoint. Sunny’s performance definitely is one that does remain extremely consistent and then he has peaked in his performance which truly makes him a strong player.

Overall Mousepsorts also has the likes of Ropz and Oskar who put up the big numbers on a repetitive nature. The team is extremely fortunate to have such players of talent and little to no ego. As such they are able to adjust their gameplay according to what they want. Mousesports’ current set of results, however, is not their best and they definitely are looking forth to improving their results. IEM Chicago will be a good test for the team as it looks to rebuild their past success.

BIG Gaming.

BIG Gaming Roster:

  • Tabsen
  • Tizian
  • Smooya
  • Gob B
  • Nex

BIG Gaming is a very tactical team under the leadership of Gob B. The man himself is a legend in Counter-Strike and is considered an inspiration for new IGLs. He understands his team better than anyone else and customises the strategies depending on the team’s playstyle. This is why BIG Gaming looks so comfortable in their gameplay right now.

The team has made a name for itself with the efficient use of grenades. This ensures that they soften up the enemy or puts them out of position much before the team fights actually start. As such, it becomes much easier for the team to potentially win the round. However, no amount of tactics or strategy would help them reach their current level in Counter-Strike if they did not have the firepower to go along with it. The likes of Smooya, Tizian and Tabsen have been able to enable the team to make strong plays in their recent tournaments.

BIG surprised at WESG, with tabseN leading the way (BIG)

The individual level of Smooya remains a very strong point for BIG Gaming. But as we see with several talented players, Smooya is not always able to maintain the same level of consistency. Being a very momentum based player, it is not rare to see Smooya severely underperforming on the team. His ability to pull off amazing shots is often directly related to the prior performance of the player. It is not rare to see Smooya shouting on stage and being extremely excited about the team’s prospects.

However, BIG also rely on Tizian and Tabsen to keep performing at their level. It is not rare to see Tabsen put up as the best player on the server. However, he does not really have ‘bad’ days as he is always very consistent with the game. The players’ synergy is what determines how strong their store is. There have been reports of Smooya possibly leaving BIG Gaming for another organisation. However, until now, they have been woefully inaccurate and Smooya has remained on this team for now. This also means that the team believes in its ability to put up challenges to the best teams in the world. IT is not without reason as we see BIG Gaming constantly putting up good numbers against the top teams. Their win against Na’Vi definitely serves as an inspiration to the other players on the team. It will also make Smooya full of confidence which is what will make this team a strong force at IEM Chicago.

Prediction :

BIG Gaming will play against Mousesports for the lower bracket round 2 matches. The two teams are extremely even, especially as saw BIG Gaming pull off that win against Natus Vincere. The German team definitely has proven itself on the big stage repeatedly. The team’s performance in this tournament will be very crucial to determine their place on the International stage.

Their opponents, Mousepsorts, on the other hand, need this tournament to start producing results. The team is definitely looking much better than their time with Snax. Currently, Mouseposrts does have a decent chance but they have not had the most time to practice together with Styko. AS such as we recommend a low bet on BIG Gaming.

The CS_Summit 3 is the third event for Beyond the Summit in Counter-Strike Global Offensive. The tournament is well known for its chilled atmosphere where the talent and sometimes the players on the cast are on a couch. The background is filled with players and production crew moving around constantly in the house. It is a very casual approach to esports tournaments and it has seen massive success in Dota 2 and now Counter-Strike.

Beyond the Summit is made up of several avid gamers and they understand the production viewpoint of an average fan. This particular event will see a prize pool of $150,000. It was initially supposed to be held in the second week of October. However, due to unspecified reasons, the organisers decided to push it further. We assume it is to accommodate the teams’ schedules. Ofcourse owning the venue has its advantages as all the matches are played at the Summit Arena.

Broadcast Talent

Format

  • Playoffs:
    • Double-Elimination Bracket
    • All matches (excl. Grand Final) are Bo3 series
    • The Grand Final is a Bo5 series; the upper bracket team has a 1 map advantage

The CS_Summit 3 format is definitely an interesting one. The tournament will see double elimination bracket where the teams have to prove themselves multiple times to advance to the next stage. The Grand finals is a Best of Five series, and if recent tournaments are any standards, we should be in for an exciting finish. However, the team coming into the Grand finals from the upper bracket receives a One map advantage. This is a big advantage and it could essentially lead to a lopsided Grand finals.

BIG Gaming vs Optic Gaming.

BIG Clan

BIG Clan Roster:

  • Nex
  • Smooya
  • Tabsen
  • Tizian
  • Gob B

BIG Clan is one of the few teams that does not play almost every tournament. And yet they impress us in whatever tournaments they do decide to play. The team led by legendary In-Game leader Gob B has seen great progress over the past few months. Gob B’s effect on the team’s performance transcends just in-game. He is a guide to several of the young talent and is constantly helping them to advance in their career.

On the team, we have several well-known players who have made a name for themselves due to their superior firepower and performance. Players like Tabsen, Tizian and Smooya are all capable of turning the tide of the match on its head. Their performance is crucial to the final outcome of their matches. Tabsen is a very experienced player who has been alongside Gob B for a long time. Not only is he a player who can turn up great performances repeatedly, but his experience also provides valuable insight into the team’s functioning. In a way, you can say that Tabsen is the glue that cements the firepower and the leadership. His influence as the deputy to Gob B of sorts is important as we head into this match.

Smooya ofcourse remains the X-factor on this team. His ability with the AWP is well-known, but we do not get to see the same level of performance across multiple tournaments. On the occasion where Smooya is performing well, we see him being hyped up on stage, shouting and often doing as much damage verbally as he does with the AWP. However, when he is not feeling it, we see the player being extremely calm and often absent on the server’s scoreboard. Smooya is crucial to the team’s performance because his AWP playstyle suits the rest of the team. He does have a healthy mixture of aggressive as well as defensive positions. It keeps the opponent guessing as to BIG’s plan on the next round.

Another supporting player for the team, Nex has been very quiet, yet consistent in his performances. The player’s ability to constantly support the big heavyweights on the team such as Tizian and Smooya is what makes him such a silent performance. If we actually look at the statistics, we see that Nex is not really doing bad, but he is not your flashy kind of player.

Optic Gaming

Optic Gaming roster:

  • K0nfig
  • CajunB
  • Snappi
  • Jugi
  • Niko

Optic Gaming recently got back Niko from their Danish counterparts. For the organisation, this has proven to be a bright light. In an otherwise bad period for the parent organisation, their CS: GO division is probably the best news.

Optic gaming has had good performance in recent weeks. While most of their matches are online matches, the victories and the margins of these victories is what inspires confidence in the team. They are a very skill-focussed lineup who rely on individual performances to gain the early advantage. This is in contrast to that of BIG gaming, so timing is extremely important in this matchup. Their performance amongst North American teams has been nothing short of exciting and exemplary.

For K0nfig, this match is extremely important. The player has the ability to constantly lift up individual matches on his shoulders. He has a very high skill-ceiling and is almost a consistent performer for the team. He is not afraid to make exceptionally aggressive plays, ensuring a great advantage for Optic Gaming. K0nfig is a person who has won innumerable Man of the Match awards. His experience and timing are crucial in most of his duels. He is responsible for the team’s performance especially on open maps such as Cache and Dust 2.

On any other map, we see how strong the Danish CT side is. They are not one to stick to the ‘traditional Danish maps’. We see them constantly play different maps with a wider map pool. However, their map pool being wide does not guarantee a win for the team. More often than not, we would have liked to see them being extremely proficient on certain maps. For now, Snappi has his task cut out as he leads the team against BIG Gaming, one of the more tactics focussed roster out there.

Prediction:

The two teams present a very diverse approach to the game. While BIG gaming has a focus on strategy and grenade usage, Optic Gaming is not on a similar level when it comes to the tactical focus within the game. Gob B’s influence on BIG gaming’s performance is painfully evident and it is one of the reasons for their success in recent months.

Optic Gaming’s performance in this tournament as well as in the upcoming months depends on how quickly Niko integrates with the team. So far, in online matches, the results have been satisfactory. It will be interesting to see whether the greater firepower on Optic Gaming prevails over BIG Clan’s strategical approach to the game.

For now, we recommend a bet on BIG gaming because they always have a chance of Smooya going off on the AWP. His performance is crucial to the outcome of this match.

Starseries & I-League will see several really good teams in attendance. These teams have shown us their skill ceiling during the previous few tournaments. It will be interesting to see them match up against each other, especially in the absence of Top tier teams like Faze Clan, Astralis and Na’Vi.

This tournament features a prize pool of $300,000 and had sixteen teams in attendance. The initial Group stage of the tournament was a BO1 Swiss format style with even the Round 5 matches being Best of One matches. We already have the top eight teams qualified to the Playoffs. The Playoff bracket matches will be Best of Three matches and single elimination format.

StarSeries & I-League Season 6 will be held at the Kiev Cybersport Arena. The 1500 Sq metres venue has been a staple in Esports events and has a lot of experience when it comes to hosting esports events. The remaining teams at the event present a mixture of several new rosters as well as well-established teams. The playoff brackets are already out and we have a couple of amazing matchups coming up in the next few days.

Broadcast.

  • All matches (excl. the final) are Bo3
  • The Grand Final is Bo5

The Prize Distribution at the event is as follows:

  • 1st Place : $125,000
  • 2nd Place : $50,000
  • 3rd-4th Place: $25,000

The remaining teams get lower amounts of money as well. You can find more information of the format, prize pool and schedule at Liquipedia.

ENCE Esports

ENCE Roster:

  • Allu
  • Sergej
  • Alexsib
  • Aerial
  • xSeven

ENCE is a Finnish team and is yet another attempt by Allu to create a strong Finnish roster. The ENCE organisation has been at the top of the Finnish Counter-Strike scene for quite some time. This current roster is comprised of several young players who definitely have a very bright future. The likes of Aleksib and Sergej have shown a lot of promise in their individual performance.

ENCE esports has had mixed results in their latest matches. While they have wins over teams like Tyloo and Mousesports, they also have losses to Optic, Complexity and Fragsters. Sergej has been exceptional with the rifle and has been responsible for many of the ENCE success in recent times.

The map pool for this team is quite good and they prefer playing on CT heavy maps like Train. Their CT defence on Train is really good and it stems from strongholds on certain sections of the map. Unlike other teams, ENCE does not always go for an aggressive push in certain regions of the map. The team’s performance is definitely making waves in the Finnish scene, but they have been stuck in the same category for quite some time. The team needs to show consistent improvement if they are to start winning important matches once again.

BIG Gaming.

BIG roster:

  • Gob B
  • Tabsen
  • Nex
  • Smooya
  • Tizian

BIG Gaming is definitely one of the most consistent teams when it comes to making it out of the Groups. However, their path in the Groups has never been truly astonishing or dominant. The X-factor on this team remains Gob B with his motivational speeches and his ability to rouse his players. He has some of the best strategies in the game, but sometimes we see him rely extra on strategies and tactics.

Counter-Strike is a very diverse game and IGLs need to mix up their strategies. Sometimes a plain B rush can work wonders for the roster, but then it might also result in a shutdown. It is up to the In-Game Leader to determine whether it is worth to take this risk or not.  One of the few In-Game leaders who has done a perfect study of opponents and in understanding the opposite In Game Leader is Glaive. Ofcourse it always helps to have some of the best players and the best coach at their disposal.

BIG Gaming will need Smooya to perform at his peak if they are to be able to put forth strong performances. The individual has seen wide variations in his performances. Sometimes he will be the best player on the server, but against other teams, he might be the person with the lowest number of frags on the server.

There are several other talented players on this team. They include Tizian and Tabsen two players who have seen a resurgence in their individual performance. Tabsen, in particular, has been exceptional with both the AWP and the rifle. His ability to bring home clutch situations with each ensures crucial round victories for BG Gaming.

Overall, BIG Gaming is not the best team when it comes to their performance on the server. They present a steady mixture of tactics and firepower. They also have a higher skill ceiling that they exhibit at most times. The team has the potential to reach greater heights, but they need to find their potential and be consistent with it.

Prediction:

Both ENCE and BIG Gaming have different approaches to the game. ENCE is not strategically oriented as BIG gaming. They have a better map pool and they rely on their individual firepower. This comes on the basis of strong individual performances by the likes of Sergej and AleksiB.

BIG Gaming, on the other hand, has had a lot more experience especially in the playoffs of big tournaments. They have been in several big tournaments of late and they consistently make it to the Playoffs. This is where their experience of playing on the LAN stage will come in handy.

For now, we recommend a bet on BIG Gaming for this match.

The FaceIT Major is currently underway with 16 of the top teams in attendance at the New legends stage. Eight of these teams are from the previous major, having secured their Legends status at that Major. The remaining eight fought their way through the New Challengers stage and ensured their place in the top 16. But in order to be truly immortalised in Counter-Strike, the teams need to ensure a place in the New Champions stage. They need to have a good performance in this Major in order to secure the Legends status for themselves.

The FaceIT Major Legends Stage will be held at the Twickenham stadium, the same venue as The New Challengers stage. This stage uses the Swiss format with each team having to win 3 matches in order to proceed to the next stage. At the same time, each team with 3 losses is out of the tournament.

We hope FaceIT has fixed the various PC issues that have plagued the CS:GO teams during the Challengers stage. Valve recently released a hotfix for the ‘footsteps audio’ issue where players would not be able to hear footsteps close to them.

Format

The New Legends Stage: September 12th – 16th, 2018

  • 16 Team Swiss System Format
  • Round 1 to 4 matches are Bo1
  • Round 5 matches are Bo3
  • The Buchholz system is used to seed matches from Rounds 3 to 5

  • Bottom 8 Teams are eliminated

BIG Gaming

BIG gaming Roster:

  • Gob B
  • Smooya
  • Tabsen
  • Tizian
  • Nex

For BIG Gaming, making it to the New Champions stage [ the playoffs] is a big feat. The team recently won the ESL One Cologne 2018 and for the stability on their roster, this current lineup needs to stay together. They have a steady mixture of new talent, some experienced heavy hitters in Tabsen and Tizian. With Gob B at the helm of their team, they lack nothing when it comes to their leadership abilities. Over the past few weeks, we have seen BIG put up strong performances thanks to their ability to understand their opponents. The team’s performance definitely has improved significantly and we see them building a loyal fan base.

Smooya needs to have consistent performances for the team to perform well at the FaceIT Major

However, Smooya has not been consistent from ESL one Cologne to the Major. His performance needs to improve dramatically if BIG is to maintain their standing at the highest level. Smooya is a player heavily dependent on his confidence and he needs momentum to get going. Without the momentum, we would often see him take on a very passive role within the team. This is exactly opposite of what he is most well known for and it hurts the team knowing he is not playing with full confidence. When Smooya starts hitting shots, however, he is always aggressive; taking peaks and winning the duels. His positioning is heavily dependent on his team’s position and he has a place to fall back on if things go wrong.

Tabsen and Tizian have been in tremendous form so far. They have practised on several maps like Overpass and Train and wee saw their performance on Overpass being above the Main Major average. They have practised shots, stuff like pre0aiming at an angle while not exposing yourself to too much risk. It was a great clip on Overpass which allowed BIG gaming to ensure a successful start to their match.

BIG rely heavily on their smokes and their executions to be successful. They have the talent and the coordination required to carry out an execution with as little resources as is available to them. The performance of the team, however, depends on the hitters on the roster. With consistency issues on the team, they will be hard-pressed to provide an adequate response to Na’Vi, one of the best teams in the world right now.

Natus Vincere

Na’Vi roster:

  • S1mple
  • Electronic
  • Flamie
  • Zeus
  • Flamie

The Natus Vincere team has always been amongst the top teams in Counter-Strike. Throughout history, they always have a different gameplay than the rest of the world. And true to their nature, this current version relies heavily on force buys. However, unlike most force buys, Na’Vi seems to make their force buys work. They have an extraordinarily high percentage of force buys conversions into won rounds.

The World’s bet player: S1mple

Na’Vi has two of the world’s best players on their roster. S1mple and Electronic form a very young and skilful pair in Counter-Strike. Indeed, Electronic was so good that there were talks of him being S1mples alternate account for a long time. S1mple has long been considered to be a top player in the world. But his personal attitude and his temperament definitely needed some work. He relied too much on his individual skill and less on the team. But with Na’Vi he has changed a lot for the better. He is more of a team player right now with exceptional positioning and even better communication. On his new roster, S1mple has gained a lot of insight as a player, something which he has not been able to do before. He has a very high skill ceiling which allows him to make almost impossible plays possible. He usually has upwards of 30 frags on every map, something which makes him a runaway hit with his fans. S1mple is the MVP on this team and they have used him as such in most of their matches. But they have also made sure to check whether he does not get carried away with his superstar status. They allow him his freedom but he does not always get the preferential treatment on the team. This is great synergy and mindset development by the players on Natus Vincere.

Electronic has been the welcome new addition to the Na’Vi CSGO team

Electronic is a late pickup for the team and he has already proven to be one of the best players in the world. His raw aim and skill make him a must pick for any team. He has the ability to understand the situation and can hit headshots even when we cannot see the heads. He often pre-aims at a point and gets a better reaction time than his opponents. Ofcourse this makes him a talented player and we wish to see more of this young player in Na’Vi’s future matches.

Can Zeus lead another CSGO team to a Major victory?

However, Na’Vi’s playstyle is determined by Zeus and Kane, the two members who put forth Gambit into winning the PGL Krakow Major. The performance of this duo has enabled Na’Vi into becoming a top-tier team once more. Na’Vi’s success does depend on Zeus’ mid-round calls and his ability to understand Gob B. If Zeus and Kane can truly understand Gob B’s gameplan, this would be a walk in the park for them. However, there is also a chance that they overestimate Gob B and walk right into the BIG Trap. This would be detrimental at this level. A second of extra reaction time can often mean the biggest difference between around, a game and the series. Na’Vi does look very strong at the Major and they have a realistic chance of making it to the Top 2.

Prediction:

While BIG’s strategy is their key aspect, they are up against Na’Vi. With Zeus and Kane behind the team, the gap in strategy is not that ‘Big’ between the two teams. Na’Vi also has the added advantage of having two of the world’s best players on their roster. S1mple and Electronic are definitely two players who have nothing left to prove on the International stage. These two players combined with the obvious experience and talent on the roster make Na’Vi one of the strongest teams at the tournament.

BIG will need every player to start performing if they are to have a dream of going deep at the Major. It is certainly something achievable for the German team as they have proven in the past [ ESL One Cologne 2018]. But without Smooya’s consistency at this tournament, things seem to be quite rough for the team. They need the confidence and the preparedness of going against one of the best teams in the world right now.

We recommend a bet on Na’Vi for this match. They have the tactics, the firepower as well as experience all going in their favour.

Faze Clan

Faze Clan roster:

  • Rain
  • Niko
  • Karrigan
  • Guardian
  • Olofmeister

The Faze Clan is back to playing on its full roster. The performance of the even without Olofmeister was still worthy of a top-class team. They played with several stand-ins during this time and still came out with a few trophies.

But the core of the roster has remained constant throughout the past few months. This is what enables the team to form its tactics and still be effective on them. When Olofmeister returned to the active roster recently, there were doubts about his form and whether he would be able to fit into the team again. But Olofmeister was spectacular with his individual performance. When a player of Olofmeister’s calibre is on the lurk, it is impossible for the enemy to avoid him. They need a plan to deal with the lurker, or else they will have big problems.

There is lack of talent on the Faze Clan roster. The team has some of the best talents from other teams. The likes of Guardian, Karrigan and Niuko definitely make this team one to be feared. Guardian has found his form in recent weeks but he has not been lights out blazing as he was during his peak on Na’Vi. Regardless Guardian’s form and consistency are crucial for the team’s potential success. He is not supposed to be the star on this roster.

Speaking of stars, Niko is easily within the top 3 players in Counter-Strike Global Offensive. The player’s aim and his understanding of the game require no introduction. He has the best game sense and is extremely skilled with a very high skill ceiling. Niko’s position on the team, however, is only possible due to the space and the support of his teammates. This team, regardless of how diverse it looks on paper just works. Karrigan is probably the only leader who can actually keep such big superstars together.

Karrigan is one of the few IGLs who can hold such a star studded team together

Being on a previous top team such as Dignitas, Karrigan has the right mentality and attitude to keep big egos together. He has been able to guide this team to success. They did not win the Eleague Boston Major, but this is their best chance to win a Counterstrike Global Offensive Major.

BIG Gaming

BIG Gaming roster:

  • Gob B
  • Tabsen
  • Nex
  • Tizian
  • Smooya

BIG Gaming somehow just pops up during CS: GO Majors. The team led by Gob B has one of the best Grenade usages in all of. They are very well trained by their IGL as well as coach on how and when to use the grenades. We have not seen the same level of grenade usage even from the best team in the world, Astralis.

But BIG Gaming does have a problem and that is ensuring a consistent level of skill on the roster. The likes of Tizian and Tabsen definitely have the talent required to make BIG a top-level team once more. However, they have not been consistent in their performances and that affects BIG’s standings. They recently won ESL One Cologne 2018, a home match for the team. It was one of the first time that the Cologne crowd had a home team to cheer for.

Gob B has always been a great leader, one who can help his team get into an advantageous situation irrespective of their individual skill level. He puts in a lot of hours in reviewing other teams and he always has a strategy on how to counter them. We have seen BIG gaming win eco rounds or rounds with lesser weaponry on a consistent basis. Most of it is due to their grenade usage and some really good individual calls by Gob B.

But that is not to say that the BIG Gaming roster does not have talent. They have some really talented individuals in the form of Tizian and Tabsen. The two have been excellent so far at the Major and are really responsible for multiple kills in crucial rounds. Without the performance of these two players, BIG would not have been able to reach the stage that they are at now.

But it is Smooya who forms the biggest concern for the team. The best UK AWPer who shone during ESL One Cologne has been visibly absent during the major. His lack of performance has not gone unnoticed since even Gob B has been handing him the rifle. Smooya needs to be back in form if BIG Gaming is to proceed further into the Champions stage.

Prediction

The two teams present really diverse playstyles. Faze Clan is a team that does not have very deep strategies but it is covered thanks to their amazing individual skill. The Faze Clan is obviously the better team mainly because they have proven themselves over the last few months. The Faze Clan is so strong that even without a core member of their roster they still won several tournaments and stayed relevant. For any other team, this would have been an uphill task.

BIG Gaming is a team that comes into prominence only after several months. The team did win ESL One cologne, but that was on the back of Smooya having a really good tournament. And frankly, he does not look at the same level during FaceiT Major. For Smooya, this is a home match, since he hails from Great Britain too, but he needs to step up his performance if BIG is to have a chance at winning and moving forth.
