Introduction

EPICENTER 2017 will be the top tier tournament to finish out October. EPICENTER 2016 was filled of many surprising storylines to end the tournament. We saw a Dignitas start to evolve into the team known as North, Natus Vincere beginning their downfall after winning ESL New York, and many close matches that could have gone either way.

EPICENTER 2016 featured teams at the peak of their levels, and EPICENTER 2016 will feature the same teams; but, these teams’ forms are a shadow of the ones showcased at EPICENTER 2016. SK Gaming, Virtus.Pro, Astralis, and G2 Esports will be looking to end their struggle after the great roster shuffle of 2017. On the other hand, Gambit Gaming, FaZe Clan, Team Liquid, and North—especially North considering they won EPICENTER 2016 under Dignitas—will all be looking to continue their rising forms from the start of 2017. Last, look to the underdogs of TyLoo and Vega Squadron as they struggle to find a way to qualify in the EPICENTER Wildcard against their respective opponents.

Once again, look forward to a great tournament of CS:GO! EPICENTER may determine which teams will change, and whose fans will be left in broken pieces or in temporary joy.

Format

EPICENTER Wild Card:

  • Two best of 3s
  • Each winner of the respective best of 3 qualifies for the main event EPICENTER 2017

Group Stage

  • Best of 3 format
  • Top 2 teams from each group advance to playoffs

Playoffs

  • Start at semi-finals pitting against the top of Group A/B against the runner up of the opposite group in a bo3
  • Grand Finals is a bo5

_________

SK Gaming

  • boltz (on loan from Immortals), FalleN, coldzera, fer, TACO

SK Gaming, since beating Virtus.Pro to open their debut, have been utterly demolishing the competition. In the span of 2 bo3s, they defeated their rivals for the top team in the CS:GO world: Astralis and FaZe. Both bo3s saw miracles, where the bo3 against FaZe saw SK come back from a crushing map 1, and the bo3 against Astralis was a legendary comeback from 4-11 -> 10-15 -> 19-17 to take series point against the Danes.

coldzera stated in an interview that losing felps and adding boltz added a passive factor into the team, as said in our last post about SK Gaming. It seems to be the case, as coldzera and fer are two of the top performing players in this tournament. Don’t forget about the revitalized FalleN, as he has had a great amount of impact with the AWP. It’s almost as if the 2 time major winning SK Gaming has returned–just with boltz instead of fnx. The case is, is that both of those two players play the same roles to backup fer and coldzera’s aggression.

Virtus.Pro

  • pasha, neo, byali, TaZ, Snax

Time and time again, the Poles seem to come out of their slump when it matters the most. Nearing the choice of a roster change, Virtus.Pro decided to come exploding out of the gates to stave off elimination versus Gambit. After a closely fought series, they had to continue their efforts again against FaZe in a match that truly defined “David vs. Goliath.”

Thus started one of the greatest final maps to a bo3, where Virtus.Pro and FaZe won each of their respective picks with relative ease. But, on inferno, miracles came out, and Virtus.Pro gained the upper hand coming into the final half of the bo3. FaZe pulled it back to 15-14, but a B rush and a missed shot from GuardiaN sealed the deal for the Poles, who went on to face G2 in the semi-finals.

The semi-finals against G2 saw close scores, but didn’t tell the whole game. It was G2 who led to their own demise, continuously losing man advantages to the Poles due to careless mistakes. Virtus.Pro themselves didn’t do anything magical, but the second coming of IEM Katowice (Virtus.Pro’s only major win) pasha on the AWP unraveled.

It hasn’t been pasha that’s the only that has been performing, but all of the team has been performing. More specifically, NEO, TaZ, and byali have all stepped up in individual maps. Snax has yet to regain that star form, but he is putting in the consistent numbers. Regardless, Virtus.Pro look like a whole new beast at EPICENTER.

_________

SK Gaming

  • boltz (on loan from Immortals), FalleN, coldzera, fer, TACO

SK Gaming come into this tournament right after the loss of felps, who has left due to being homesick (which contributed to his poor performances as of late). Now, they bring in boltz, the IGL of Immortals and a former teammate of FalleN, coldzera, and fer on the original Luminosity Gaming lineup.

SK Gaming’s results as of recent don’t replicate a top 3 team, but felps performance and the team morale at the time may have played heavily going into the matchups they played. Now, having boltz on the lineup will force SK Gaming to play a very loose style. But, this is a good thing. With boltz, who played a passive lurk role on Immortals, SK Gaming can substitute felps’ aggression onto FalleN’s AWP, and this made FalleN a top 3 player last year.

Because of this, you can expect a revitalized SK Gaming coming into EPICENTER. Their past results won’t necessarily tell the story of SK Gaming’s EPICENTER storyline, as adding boltz will force SK Gaming to reinvent their playstyle to make compromise to boltz’ preferred play-style. One thing for sure is that we won’t be seeing a struggling SK Gaming. More of, expect an hungrier-than-ever SK Gaming who wants to win this tournament and retain their former glory.

Virtus.Pro

  • pasha, neo, byali, TaZ, Snax

How, how the mighty have fallen! Virtus.Pro’s continuing demise into the deep pits of failure continue, as they struggle to beat teams of lesser caliber and fail to contest opponents of their perceived tier. Even then, Virtus.Pro has seen the rise of pasha and neo in recent times. But, they are hampered by the steady fall of individual skill from TaZ and Snax.

It would be crazy to consider them as a tier 1 team today, because they lack the skill to contest in the current meta. The current meta, which heavily relies on individual skill, is something Virtus.Pro had always lacked. But, the reason they won in the past was that their ability to change up the game and present sudden situations to their opponents gave them the upper hand in taking aim duels and battles.

Even then, Virtus.Pro still seem to falter at the basic plays of CS. Time and time again, Virtus.Pro’s CT holds and T sides show major gaps in the defense/offense, allowing enemies to separate Virtus.Pro from one another and play Virtus.Pro into unfavorable positions. The only way they can come back at EPICENTER is if pasha and Snax show up in top form, and TaZ ups his game. Not to mention, they’ll have to heavily rely on one another and bolster their team play to win rounds.
